Apparently it's hybrid optical electric. But actually the most interesting thing I saw in there is about the new MIPS chip they are working on with x86 emulation built in. While I know that isn't new, a lot of AMD chips were(are?) based around the POWER core with an x86 "emulator", it's the first time I've heard of you being able to run native code in such a set up.

Not very fast probably, this is built for floating point performance. Some of the slower supercomputers that don't use gpu's would probably be much more suited to that sort of work. Or a big fuck off cluster or distributed computing effort.
