I might have to look a bit further into this. I am especially curious as to what the effective efficiency is.

I do also wonder what might happen to said lists once some of the more elaborate stuff becomes declassified- some stuff that was on lists in previous years later became classified as it was tasked with stuff like nuclear simulations.

maybe the supercomputer is rigged with explosives...JK ok china has big supercomputer, number 1, blows away americans, not suprising. now what to do with number 1 big one. heh, no wonder they used USA chips.

First thought: laptops? really?

Second thought: Welcome to botnet 2.0 for more effective hacking attempts of other governments top secret computers, and decoding what they have already acquired.

Finding out how human proteins are arranged so we can find where a disease starts to make a pill that cuts it off before it kills you?
Doing all sorts of math to figure out the exact path of asteroids in the future to make sure they don't collide with the satellites that make your GPS work?
Analyzing a million terrabytes of underground sonar information to pinpoint where oil deposits may lie so people can continue to have gas for their cars to get to work every day?

Real-life shit, son.
And as a bonus it will also be able to monitor the entire internet in realtime and automatically censor anything the Chinese government doesn't like the sound of.

China should work more on making a huge botnet. Botnets are cheaper and sometimes faster. It would also make things easier to spy on people as well.
For spying you mean by security cameras?

Does anybody else find it ironic that the Chinese supercomputer was made in the US?

Well those companies are probably being funded by all the money the USA has borrowed from chinese subsistence farmers. The only reason China hasn't destroyed you economically by now is they want their money back.

You do know the picture isn't of this new supercomputer right? The picture is of something called Flashmob 1.

Wow i'm using one of those right now.
Pretty fast.
Running Windows 9.
Windows 8 was alright but it couldn't handle a computer this fast.
Of course you are.
What the heck? Windows 9?

Damn these chinese people are going to make skynet and then they can't control it so we are doomed in 2020 maybe earlier

Those that want a bit more tech with their supercomputer news
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/10/28/ch..._supercomputer/

Long and short of it
peak theoretical performance of 4.7 petaflops
2.51 petaflops in reality

Based on Xenon CPUs and tesla graphics chips (the models might change but CPU GPU hybrids are common enough in HPC nowadays) the most interesting part of it all is the custom interconnect (those new to this game read up on amdahl's law) for which there is no meaty data on at this point in time other than they are optical.

Those that ask why consider that pharmacology is no longer a guessing game http://www.theregister.co.uk/2010/01/14/nv...ench/page2.html (first page is good too).
