i bought all the parts today, wasnt able to find the atmega chips but have just got 28 pin chips hoping they will do the same job

My programmer is built (I couldn't figure out if I could use my Willem), and I'm just waiting on my Atmegas... hurry hurry please!!

I have built and installed Chiip, seems to work ok with backups (I tried Tony Hawk), but I could not make original Wii discs to work. So I guess it doesnt support original discs with current Chiip firmware (1.0 beta 2)
 
Well I just ordered all the parts, I'll try this out when I get them. It's just too cheap to resist.

All the parts listed in the guide (along with some extra resistors), cost me ~$11 US, including shipping.

yea, i'm having a hard time finding them in one place in the USA... i dont want to pay 2-3 bucks shipping for each store i have to buy from...

In the US You can get everything you need from DigiKey. There is a $5 surcharge on orders of less then $25. In my case I exceeded $25 because I needed wire, and I snagged some DB9 connectors because I am going to do Scorpei's external serial mod as well.

You could try Jameco also, they should have everything you need too. Haven't ordered from them in a blue moon so don't remember if there is a minimum order or not.

Here is myorder from Digikey. This should be everything you need, except for solder. I went with a blue led to match the Wii. Also ordered a extras of some of the items (caps and resistors) because they are so cheap. I will find someplace else to use them eventually

Today i builded the programmer and im glad to say its working just perfect

Using a ATMEGA8-16PU with the default 3.3v pad its working superb on my wii...

The cost for the whole thing (programmer parts + 1 ATMEGA8-16PU) here in Brazil was U$5 ... yep, just 5 bucks for

- 1x ATMEGA8-16PU
- 1x Eletroctyc 47uf/25v Capacitor
- 8x 220ohms Resistors
- 1x DB25 male + Cape
- 1x DB9 Female + Cape
- 2x 28-Pin Socket
- 1x 100nf Ceramyc Capacitor (didnt even used, neither the led)


Thie Chiip is to cheap

im hoping this chip will work , from Jaycar in australia.

i understand its 5v instead of 3.3 , but from what ive read it should be ok.

i might even soon build up a small tutorial as i go with jaycar part numbers for all the australia people. if anyone is interested that is.

if u cant wait for my parts list , take in a printout of the parts list on the site , make sure u write down the ZZ8753 Atmega , otherwise u might confuse the sales guy. Jaycar staff are VERY HELPFUL.

the other parts would be around $10.

Works out kinda costly for a chip , but u get the good feeling inside that u made it yourself it and its fully upgradeable.

I built one from parts from Jaycar, including the chip you listed above. The PI version is just the industrial version, so slightly more expensive..

I just went to the store with a shopping list and had one of the staff help me fill it

Btw, I should also add - that beta1 of the code didn't work for me.. but beta2 works great !

Well that was too easy..

the staff will always do there best , just incase i would take the Atmega cat no. Everything else they will find in 2 minutes.

I like the case u use , i was going to use a simple abs backshell (dirt cheap)

So i take it running the chip at 3.3v's will only output 3.3 on the signal lines?

time to buy a few chips tomorrow.
 
yeah, i looked up the part number and rang them first to make sure it was available.. then just rocked in and grabbed the rest..

having the gender-changer shell gives you more room to make the programmer, not that it is very messy inside.. oh and no cap on the programmer - just a bunch of resistors..

but yeah, beta2 is a must.. i've spoken with the author and he's a top dude.. plus it was fun making the thing

on a side note.. This seems like the smartest choice for a wii mod.

Say NO to closed source mods..

Anything can be added once the source is available. D2A , region free , dvd read speed..

now we just need homebrew ;-)
