Hardware checkerboard when loading games after 3.1 update

I am hoping someone can help me out I had a friend bring a PS4 over for me to look at that was working fine before the 1/13/16 update to 3.15 now when ever they try to load a game or app it shows a blue and black checkerboard on the left hand side of the screen then after a couple min reboots. I have done a database rebuild and installed the update from usb in safe mode neither have worked.

Any help would be great.

Ok I just did some playing with the PS4 using another HDMI cable I still get the blue and black checkerboard on the left side however the game is running in it. Any ideas sorry I am not a Sony person so I am kind of at a loss

Checkerboard type things can be a sign of something wrong with the GPU (in general, I mean, not PS4 specific). You might need to contact Sony and have the system repaired.
