If you're really looking for a cheap computer to email/surf/word process, look around your city for an electronic recycling center or used computer store. I just purchased 2 dozen computers for my new practice.. they're nothing fantastic, everyday HP boxes that were probably $1200ish new:

P4 2.5 Ghz
512 Megs RAM
Keyboard/Mouse
Onboard video.. 32 or 64 megs

They cost me $112 each before taxes and 15" CRT monitors for them cost $35 each. Each machine is a universal donor to all of the other machines... I have 6 extra towers to swap parts if necessary.

Even look on Craigslist... I seriously don't understand why you would build something that bad, new, when you can get a netbook or cheap Dell for $500, which includes a new monitor.

10 weeks is a long time to find a good, used, local computer on your local online classifieds. The college year is winding up... put up a poster on the local campus? lol There are so many BETTER options out there. Heck, I'll give you my current machine for $300 and it costs me $2200 to build only two years ago! lol

to save a bit of money, you could drop the windows and just install a linux distro. it can do e-mail easily and will stop any non-tech savvy users getting viruses.

linux is much easier than windows to set up in my experience and will run faster on the low ram you plan on getting. I would go with a lighter distro than ubuntu if its just for email. My friend says ubuntu netbook remix is really simple and fast loading so it may be ideal even on a pc.

Are you sure? I looked up the motherboard (Intel 915G) and it says it works with DDR2...

Well, the 915G can technically support both. You might never know

Seeing it has AGP, it seems a lot dated, so I went with DDR1.

Where you getting the computer... Curiosity makes me wonder. And is the Celeron a Dual Core?

- Windows XP Professional Pre-Installed

You just gotta find the monitor somewhere else x3

Add a Keyboard and Mouse for $5.18 CAD... Saves you a lot of money this way ^^. Since I go directly to their store, I don't know how much they charge for shipping... Oh and I got a Dell Optiplex GX280 Tower and the mother board does support DDR2. I just forgot the motherboard's model #...

i'm pretty sure you could build 2 computers for that price, look at the price of chinese-made cases, decent(ASUS) motherboards, cpu, ram etc.

stuff is real cheap now.

and like was said, use kit - even get a used, and upgrade it a bit - ram, cpu, BIG harddrive(s)

idiot proofing the computer

UAC was copied from what linux has done for over 15 years, badly, very badly.
