ROM Hack Changing the buttons

I have a DS lite, and my L button broke and I can't get it fixed or get a new one. I can't play a lot of my favourite games anymore, so I was wondering if there is a way to change the buttons on the DS by hacking the rom. So for example switching the L button to the R or Y or Select etc. So when you press that button, it replaces the action of the L button.

I'd assume so but I think it'd be easier to use the button recognition facilities of a cheat device (standalone or built into a flash card) to make a button/combo register as L. Obviously some games that use all buttons won't have an appropriate substitute but most will work fine.

Yo Bat, try blowing really hard into the cracks of the shoulder button. It may solve your problem.
