I have the black and blue DS model, but I was wondering if it was possible to just change the blue part (Outer case of the upper half) without having to completely dismantle the DS.

Complete disassembly is suggested to remove and seperate the upper half.

EDIT: The above statement is my opinion. I am a cautious person who would rather do something carefully once than to force things and risk them breaking.

Sorry, the above poster is wrong.

You do not have to completely take your DS apart to remove the top. Just get the rubber plugs out and unscrew the top halves. Slide the blue part up and out. It should come right off.

I put the top of a gold zelda case on my brother's DS without taking apart the rest, so I can assure you that this is possible.

I guess you forced it to bend past the hinge spring.
I guess some clarification is in order on my part. First post edited.

On the inside of the lid remove the 4 rubber screw covers, take out the 4 small cross head screws (no special screwdriver required) once all 4 are completely removed, close the DS lid, put the DS in front of you with the Slot 1 (NDS ) card slot towards you. Push the blue case top away from you and it should move about 3-5mm open the DS and remove the coloured top. Replace in the same manner. You do not have to take the whole unit apart.

Hmmmm, I don't think there's anything forced if you replace only the outer part of the upper screen!
I have modded my NDS, and I don't remember that it was anything forced to bend on any part..
Are you sure about that?

Yes you are right. I apologize for my confusion. I was mis-understanding. I just realized the OP is talking about the part with the raised DS logo on it. Again, sorry. Please dis-regard all my previous comments about this.

I figured you mis-understood it!

It's OK! That's why I asked you if you're completely sure!
