I graduate in ~3 weeks (December 21st) and I have to start applying for College in the Spring. Up until now, literally now, I was sure of what path to follow in college: Diagnostic Radiologist (X-Ray tech in hospitals :D). It being because I have a genuine interest in the field and a more...sentimental reason as well. BUT here's the unsure part, I want to know if the investment pays off, if my time and money are being spent into a profitable income. No point in doing this if there's no job opportunities/pay is low, right? So, your opinions please. :P

Practically anything in the medical field will pay off. It is a massive and growing sector, thanks to a large baby boomer population that is entering their final decades. My only advice would be to think critically about how much money you will be paying in tuition. Do not blow $100,000 on tuition or loans for a job that will pay you $40,000. If you burden yourself with debt you will be miserable.

I'm seconding Blood Fetish on this (Off topic, I never thought I would ever combine those words into a single, coherent sentence. Huh).

I'm sure that the education for it might be tough, but there are definitely going to be job opportunities for you once you graduate. Plus, the pay seems to be pretty damn good.

If this is really what you want to do, I say go for it.

See, that's the problem with capitalism.
Instead of pursuing their dreams, people opt for careers that they have much less interest in because they can make more money with that.
But because of capitalism, there isn't many other options other than "make as much money as possible", which brings us back to the first sentence.

He already expressed genuine interest in the field. He just wants to be sure he's going to be able to make a living off of it and not burden himself with dept he can't pay.

    I know that.
What I meant is that he is considering switching over to another domain in which he has less interest in because of money.

I'd say stick with your career choice. Medicine is always improving and people are always going to have health issues so this field will always be in need of workers.

I support capitalism in general, but kind of in the same way as Churchill supported democracy ("It has been said that Democracy is the worst form of government except all the ones have been tried.")

Yeah, it sucks that people aren't free to explore whatever interest suits them, but that is life; until a day comes when the resources at our disposal are infinite, it's going to persist.

This is simply not true. Pay is a function of supply and demand. Look at how much your average engineering major makes after graduation versus your average English major. If everyone just flocked to the most money then all fields would pay equally due to arbitration. Instead we see that the overwhelming majority choose whatever they are interested in, or they perceive to be easiest.

Well why waste money and time in a field that has no job opportunity? Seriously, it makes no sense. I want to make a sustainable income and not have to worry about debt because unlike most people around me right now, I want to make sensible choices instead of digging my ass into deep financial shit. I have a general love for the field, just like I have a general love for guitar. But which has better job security? Which is more feasible to live on? Exactly. :P

If he does have a blood fetish, then I say go for gynecologist, and specialize and become a periodontist.

You need to attend to the lower needs before devoting your attention to the higher ones. Pursuing one's dreams is higher in the pyramid than having a goddamn roof.

Now, just HOW retarded are you?
Because I don't think it's even worth my time arguing with you.
