I have a trimmed game that has a reproducible freeze on my Acekard2i (This question however is more general than just involving AK2i.) Could this freeze be caused by the trimming, and therefore be circumvented by using a non-trimmed ROM?
I also read in places that recent flashcarts can sometimes play new, clean roms just fine without patches or OS updates. Is a trimmed rom considered not clean?

Possibly.

Yes, a 'clean' ROM means one that is not trimmed or patched or otherwise modified.

Trimmed roms can cause freezing if trimmed incorrectly, and some flashcards will freeze when using trimmed roms. If they freeze, a clean rom (untrimmed) will most likely fix the problem.
