Can I boot Ubuntu right from the web?

I think GRUB Legacy can do it, but I forgot how (if it can be done).

I burned an Ubuntu 10.10 x64 Live CD. My new build is 64-bit with 4GB of RAM. However, it has an old, slow, used DVD drive. It's so slow that Ubuntu gives read errors because it cannot access the data. The computer I'm typing this on is running off of that very CD.

I have no OS installed, no GRUB/Legacy, no NTLDR, or anything. Can I boot Ubuntu straight off the web?

i dont know if you can boot Ubuntu from the web (i think not)
but one solution is to boot ubuntu from an usb drive
you must have the ubuntu iso (download it directly from ubuntu web site)and a usb with at last 2gb of memory and then go to:
System -> Administration -> Startup Disk Creation
then just select the usb you want to install Ubuntu and the iso
after that restart you pc and go to boot options then select :
boot from usb
as the first device to boot
and then install, or just have ubuntu like a demo

You just need that and an .iso.

Okay, but...

My computer doesn't have always-on internet; I get 1 chance to use the net. Ubuntu installs require an internet connection, no? And will either of the above methods wipe my flash drive if I use it?

I just need to boot Ubuntu externally once.

doesn't require an internet connection (why would you even think that?) and it will just place folders on your flash drive.
although some of the bootable usb creators erase the data on the usb, so just go and erase it.

You could either...
1) create a bootup usb
2) get the hard drive, install ubuntu using a different computer
3) network boot

fyi, network boot DOES NOT require internet.
just requires you to be connected to a network with another computer.

It's actually possible to install it from the internet, but that requires GRUB to be pre-installed.

yes you must have a internet connection ,but not for install just for downloading the iso
you can always try to download the iso it at an internet cafe or just tell a friend to download it for you
also the usb will be erased but you can always format it after you have installed ubuntu

I swear the Ubuntu installer has 3 check boxes, 1 for free space, 1 for an active internet connection and one for something else.

Anyway, LiLi should work. It doesn't even wipe my flash drive!

Oh, and to those who didn't know, GRUB CAN do it.
