Hacking broken ps3 jailbrake possible?

have a ps3 with a non working blu ray drive(it wont accept discs and i for the life of me cant figure out why), would jailbreaking it work in any way to run homebrew/backups off external/internal drive w/o having to replace bluray drive?

Yes, check the FAQ. The more recent payloads/exploits allow running games and homebrew without a disc drive.
