Hacking Bricked DS

I recently ordered a R4iDS from dealextreme.com. After ordering the R4, i latter read that it might brick my DS if I used the wrong firmware. On reading more, I read that that is not possible and no R4 firmware really does that.

Just curious, what exactly happens to a DS when it gets bricked? Comparing to a computer, does the bios get corrupt? Can't the bios be changed? Is it embedded in the one of the ARM processors? Can't they be changed? Isn't there any company out there that sells any of these components cheap enough to be replaced?

Bricked means it'll be useful as a brick since you wouldn't be able to use the ds at all unless you flashed it before hand.....

Bricking is when it becomes useless. When everyone used to play Animal Crossing: Wild World there would be these people who would brick other people's games over WiFi.
