Hacking boot9strap combo key confirmation fails

Frustrating problem... I have previously softmodded other 3DS's but this particular unit is driving me bonkers!

I have prepared the SD card and I'm using boot9strap. When I launch it everything passes until I press the combo key. The first is a Left arrow and when I press it the process bails and I have to start over.

I havent a clue what could be going wrong and the D-Pad on this 3DS seems to be okay on the home menu.

Any ideas? Is there an alternative to Boot9Strap?

Take a can of compressed air, blow into the cracks of the d-pad?

So I got it to work. Compressed air did not help.

I discovered that the game that was in the unit (a DS game called 1001 Touch Games) did not work properly. When launched it just goes to the "Power Off" screen. Not sure why, but the game looks clean. I tried a native 3DS game and the system worked. With the 3DS game installed the combo sequence worked. Weird huh?
