Kojima Productions partners with XBOX for the development of 'PHYSINT', after PlayStation steps away

Hideo Kojima's return to the action-espionage genre with PHYSINT will continue in partnership with XBOX. The game was initially announced as a PlayStation-exclusive in 2024, but the publisher decided to step away.

"As confirmed earlier through our official channels, in mid-June of this year, we unexpectedly received notice from PlayStation Studios that they would cancel the PHYSINT project," explained Hideo Kojima in an online post. "PHYSINT is an important project both to me personally and to KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS. Determined to keep the project alive, we have spent the last three months searching tirelessly for a new partner. In the course of seeking advice and pursuing negotiations with people across many fields, we found in XBOX a partner with whom we share a common vision for the future, and we have decided to team up with them once again. Please rest assured that development of PHYSINT, our genre-defining action-espionage title, is ongoing and will continue moving forward."

Asha Sharma, XBOX CEO, added the following: "Creators have choices about where and how they bring their ideas to life. We’re honored that Kojima-san has chosen XBOX to work with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on PHYSINT. His ambition to challenge conventions reflects the kind of creativity we want to support at XBOX".

For its part, PlayStation provided an update on the matter by saying: "After careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to step away from collaborating with KOJIMA PRODUCTIONS on its project PHYSINT. We continue to have great admiration for Hideo Kojima's vision for the game. Our relationship remains strong after three decades of industry-leading, genre-defining creative cooperation, and we look forward to continued close collaboration with Hideo Kojima and his award-winning independent studio in the future."

PHYSINT is still in its early development stages. Last year, Kojima noted that the game won't be out for another "five or six" years. However, there has been some progress with the game as Kojima Productions planned to kick off casting, scans, and performance capture sessions in 'late 2026'.

yet another $ony L, and Xbox W, no fanboying just facts

Nintendo probably has no interest in these types games, they're perfectly content with their 1st party stuff..

I mean, they do though?
They did a lot of partnerships like that for games like Bayonetta, Xenoblade (before Monolith became part of Nintendo), Astral Chain (which is now a Nintendo IP, even though it wasn't originally) and now Duskbloods, which seems to have Nintendo involved somehow (funding or something at least).

What are Sony doing lately? It's like they're trying to get as many people pissed as possible?

Even if the game was shaping up to be a disapointment, man, just take the loss and move on. The last thing they needed is more bad press.
Remember when pizza hut had PS1 Demo discs? Imagine Domino's does that but with Xbox games.

To be expected. Death stranding 1&2, while I kinda like the game, didn't reach the financial performance target they were hoping for. Sony is not about to put in another hundreds of millions to fund his novelty project as his Exec buddies at Sony have mostly left the company in the past couple of years.

Also let face it, Kojima is kinda of a dick and up his own ass most of the time, dude thinks he's a fucking rock star. While Konami was also a dick when they were dealing with him, they at least kept him grounded, somewhat.

I mean, if he wants to make a movie go and make a movie, eh? :teach:

Can't fault Sony here really.

Since Sony have been getting a lot of backlash, they got PTSD from seeing anything with the word 'physical' or any part of the word.

I'm somewhat surprised. Granted, death stranding 2 somewhat underperformed, but it's hardly anywhere close to one of Sony's worst performers (eg concord). If they are willing to continue supporting an arguably worse Marathon and Horizon Hunters, Kojima's games deserve even more support since his look like runaway successes compared to those. At the very least, Kojima has somewhat of a cult following. A following that will now follow him over to xbox instead.

I wonder if Sony has suffered such great financial losses from its "live-services" blitz that they are now using even the slightest of excuses to cut off projects. If so, I think the axing of Kojima's could be the tip of the iceberg and we could see a spate of cancellations in the following months.
