Homebrew Blu-ray, Wii-Ray

So the Wii has USB connections on the back and there are external blu-ray drives with USb connection. If you connect the blu-ray to the wii through usb is there any chance a player can be made and played through homebrew?

I don't think the Wii could ever do that due to power. Also its not a HD console so no?
 
No, Blu-Ray video playback wouldn't be possible, but data access could be. So if you also had a BD burner in your PC, you could keep 50GB worth of homebrew, mp3's, and SD video files.

But for that, you might as well get an external HD.

Actually the Wii has an option to output to HDTV in its system settings. Just go to Options>>Settings>>Screen>>TV Resolution.
