My laptop has developed a truly odd fault with the keyboard. I can't get a capital W or S when holding the left shift key but I can fro the right shift key, and I can't get a capital x from either shift key. I'm on a Linux machine (you'd have to ask my flatmate for the exact specs). The two shift keys work fine when used with any other key. Just those three it has an issue with. What the hell is going on and how do I fix it, short of taking up more space on the desk with an external keyboard?

Make sure your keyboard layout is setup correctly in your Keyboard settings. If there are multiple layouts installed, it might have changed on you, which can happen with certain key combos if they're setup.
