The maker of it just tends to not put anymore work into it.

Actually, DSaim still works, and I use it regularly, if you have AIM.

I took this to mean any other IM clients have working programs on the DS. No need to be snarky.

I registered on GBAtemp to tell you that there is now a working alternative to BeUp. I have written a tutorial on how to set it up and get it working here:
How To Put MSN Messenger On A Nintendo DS, A Working BeUp Alternative!

This method uses DSOrganize and IRC
