I have never bothered with the wii hacking scene, mainly because i was too young to actually realize hacking was a thing. Now i know where my old wii is and i'm going to get it soon, and wanted to hack it, but i'm not sure where to begin.
If you are going from stock and just need to do it rather than understand all the aspects involved then https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/
If you have some weird setup and need to bash it into shape it can get more tricky as there were all sorts of odd ideas, half measures and poorly thought out hacking schemes going on during the wii. I shall spare a discussion of that for now.
If you do aspire to understand the aspects involved I did see a work in progress the other month that looked promising but for now https://wiki.gbatemp.net/wiki/Category:Wiihttp://wiibrew.org/wiki/Main_Page and what you can glean from the original guide linked will have to do.
Short version the wii has a firmware, it has smaller modules called IOS that different games use (most people then redirect things to a hacked one or indeed a custom IOS aka cIOS). Said firmware (which can be modified a bit to do some things, see something like starfall) also has channels, some hack the channels but this is limiting so don't most will instead install some homebrew channels and go from there (the homebrew channel is considered essential by basically everybody, most will also install a USB loader channel but you could launch such a thing from the homebrew channel if you wanted). Also the gamecube backwards compatibility is handled by something called mIOS which is kind of like IOS but not quite, still get c(ustom)MIOS though but others will use other methods https://sites.google.com/site/completesg/backup-launchers/gamecube .
Bootmii would have been covered by the earlier install guides but http://wiibrew.org/wiki/BootMii . Short version is depending upon the age of your wii you can install some protection on it in case you mess up your firmware or something.
the promising work in progress was mine?
I covered only how the console works, without attempting hacking steps yet.
I didn't have time to write the explanation about hacking part yet, I just covered what a signature is.
complete softmod guide is good (even more since it fixed one of the biggest issue last month).
Another way to hack your wii without understanding, is using Modmii. it's a Windows program which generates a personalized guide based on answers you provides.

@Cyan, who ended up pushing the complete softmod guide update? I can't remember/reset my login credentials to be able to make edits as I once was able. I'd like to see about getting access again in case quick edits are ever again required in the future
I don't know who did the cIOS page update. we (almost only me) complained for years it told users to install mixed cIOS version/base, and I noticed last month it was finally fixed.
I didn't even know who to contact to make that change earlier. I'm glad it's finally fixed, I want to thanks the person who did it.
FancyNintendoGamer567:
first time I read that guide.
the hacking part is good (there's not much to do, so it's very easy)
their additional guides have some issues, like wii mod lite (mixed steps order? missing steps?)
As always, these guides are straight forward to perform the hack if you are on latest version, but never explain what to do next, or give options.
