You don't buy a card with SLI, SLI is a multi card technology.
As far as sli goes, it's compatible with every Nvidia card since GeForce 6x00 era and every 3DFX card since Voodoo 2 (1998).
SLI stands for Scalable Link Interface and is a technology that enable the use of two (and more) GPU for the rendering of a 3d scene and outputting on a single display.
The way sli works, you need a compatible mother board and 2 graphic card, the only exception being dual gpu card wich use the sli technology "internally" ( inside the card)

The AMD equivalent is called crossfire and is available since X800, although the use of crossfire without the need of a master card appeared with the X1x00.

Well then, what motherboard and power supply do you have?

EDIT: Games like the sims 3 or even WOW doesn't need high end gpu to works correctly, however more recent games may.
The motherboard model, or at least the presence of pcie x16, AGP or pci slot is required to install one. Also the Powers supply(psu) power rating is needed to see if it can power the card, a lot of branded tower only comes with the cheapest power supply that can power the computer leaving almost no room for the addition of a graphics card.

As for your power supply, you'll have to open your case and read what's written on it.

Alternatively, if it is a branded tower, you can just give the model name and number, If it is a clone, you can simply look at your computer invoice.

I've built a new PC recently, and I'm using a GTX 580.
So far, no game i've tested gave me problems (even the Duke Nukem Demo), and I run'em at the maximum quality.
OF COURSE, the GPU by itself will NOT make any miracle. You PC must be robust, stable and, important, must have a good power supply.
My specs, just for reference:
CPU: Intel 2600k 3.4 GHz
RAM: 8 GB dual channel Corsair 1600 DDR 3
GPU: GTX 580 1.530 ram
MB: Asus P8P67 Deluxe
Power: Corsair TX 700W Real

For your screen size, 6850, 6950 or GTX 560i should work greatly.
however, you should provide more details on your system.
