also days after, I read that Universal Studio's set up fake movie torrents and caught the people (me included) and forced our cable company to disconnect our cable or they would sue, so it's a scare tactic, but believe me it worked on me!!!

So that's why I love newsgroups now!!
Newsgroups aren't much safer you know. ;p I know people who had their connections terminated due to downloading illegal files from Newsgroups. ISPs can still track what you download from Newsgroups and thanks to most if not all implementing deep packet scanning, they can tell exactly what file is being downloaded. Also at any rate, there are some organisations setting up fake newsgroups as well or proxies for newsgroups that track what files you download.

No matter what anyone says, theres no safe, sure file way to pirate in this day and age. Theres still always a risk everytime you pirate a file. Though for some people, the gain outweighs the risk. *whistles at his anime collection*

Yeah before I got busted, I was downloading every new movie that was coming out, and I downloaded about 150 movies and just that 1 got me busted!

I'm glad they didn't do what Napster did, and sued the individuals to make their point about illegal downloading. I also use Demonoid but it's a torrent just like utorrent and it's not secured, anybody can put a torrent online and if you happen to download it and it's a fake torrent set up by movie or music studio then you are BUSTED!!

One for sure SAFE bet is just getting free movies and Wii games from your local library and taking them home and using dvdshrink for the dvd's and using my LG to download the games. I have a huge collection now, screw Blockbuster or Netflix, they OVER charge!

The only way to ensure your safety is to delete your "system32" folder. That thing is a virus magnet. I deleted mine years ago and it has done wonders.

Or online game rentals where you pay like 10$ or so a month and get games mails to you overnight. Then you simply dump them, send them back and the next dat, get a new game in the mail.

newsgroups haves SSL encrypted connetions, yout isp cant see shit..
Eh, at least in the US, SSL now a days does nothing. They passed a law where ISPs can cut your connection if they feel you are illegally sharing or downloading stuff. My friend ended up getting his connection cut at Comcast due to him transferring large ammount od data over a VPN to his work.

Yeah my brother-n-law works for Warner Cable and he said they will probably be doing something like that, where if you download a lot of files than say your neighbor, then you will pay for the bandwidth that you are using, and your neighbor would pay less because they don't download large files... this would suck hard!

ok i just downloaded u torrent, i ran a spyware scan and i found a u torrent trojan, should i be worried? And how come im stuck at 99.5% when downloading lost winds?

You guys can be a fun bunch.

JJbro1, you might want to take a lot of this thread very cautiously, as a lot of the talk on it is worth as much as a 3 dollar bill.

Unless you're not Canadian. In Canada, an action like telling me I downloaded file X and telling me casually "oh that file was illegal" is an indication they are now headed for a courtroom where I would be suing them for invasion of privacy. And in Canada, invasion of privacy massively outweighs some company losing a few bucks on a lost sale.

Regarding torrents. They are largely safe for one simple reason. The process of downloading a torrent is a give and take process that means if it has a virus in it, you are giving it to yourself while trying to give it away. And it's illogical to presume a virus spreader is going to infect himself in order to infect others.
But if you think anything online is 100% safe you are a fool.

If you are looking for the better torrent program, look no further than Azureus.
http://azureus.sourceforge.net/
There's nothing illegal about owning or using a torrent protocol program either.
It's what you download with it that decides that.

For those that actually know how to use a modem, router and Azureus, you can also use it to completely defeat the throttling practices of some ISPs by altering the nature of the data as it comes into your place.
I currently have no need to care if Bell Canada IS throttling torrents on their Sympatico service. Bite me Bell

People that use Limewire or similar programs, either know enough about viruses and know how to defeat them, or know nothing about viruses, and keep maintenance busy. Which one are you?

The first rule of downloading is this. If you don't know much about it, you don't want to do it till you do.
The right person can send you the right file that can PHYSICALLY kill you computer. You know, make it so you are buying a new one.
The right person can send you the right program so they can know every key you press, and in short order TAKE your computer control from you.
But usually you just end up with a need to reformat, and watch all your data go up in smoke.
Have you ever formated your system without preparation? It isn't pretty.

Woah, that's scary, sosodef. That's just wrong... What they did.

Actually it's the complete opposite. It's neither scary nor wrong, what they did. They being the ISP. It's within their right to watch your traffic and disconnect you if you violate their terms of service. You were doing something that is illegal.

There are plenty of ways to encrypt your traffic. So if you are downloading from usenet, a torrent or from the web your ISP won't be able to see what you are downloading. All you need to do is do some research and not listen to most of the knuckle heads posting here.

Yeah, uTorrent. I would say I've never come across a virus or trojan in torrents, but recently I've found a spate of trojans in files. And now I have a Trojan installer I can't find. I looked up how to get rid of them, and most people said either re-install everything (which I'm just not going to do, as my Vista/XP dual-boot took ages) or go into safe mode, scan with loads of antiviruses, reboot a few times make sure the system is clean, and then run virus-scans again.
Trouble is, both take so long I just can't be bothered. The trojans don't seem to be doing anything anyway...
Any advice?

And avoid trying to get keygens and cracks, there are so many viruses and problems down that road it's not worth it. Everything else you're fine with if you use your common sense. No 500kb films or albums basically
