My friend wants to get one and wants me to softmod it but it's been a long time since I modded my own and I had an old XL. Are the new ones still moddable? the one he was looking at was firmware 1.6 something I believe, can those still be softmodded? or does it need to be hardmodded?

All 3ds are still Hackable through one avenue or the other.. I believe the magnet hack is still usable on the New 2ds Xl and that is the newest iteration of the 3ds family. Regardless of firmware.. Go here: https://3ds.hacks.guide/

I don't see anything about a "magnet hack" in the version table. Is that something physical you need to do?

It's in ntrboot... It is compatible with all versions regardless of firmware. You would need a compatible flashcart and magnet (Unless you're using a 2ds).

Is they're anything easier I can do? I remember before all you had to do was move some files around on an SD card or something.. Or using armloader9 or something like that it was very easy when i did it.

Take a look at https://gbatemp.net/threads/newhax-frogminer-100-free-b9s-cfw-11-8-us-eu-jp.519512/ if ya dont want anything physical to have to use to hack your console with.

This works for the new 3DS models to?

All versions 3DS regardless of model and or OFW are hackable with the current methods.

Can someone please help me? my friend wants to get an SD card for his new nintendo 3DS. does it use SDHC and microSD? I only have a 3DSXL so I don't know what and what isn't compatible with newer 3DS's. And does the size matter? he wants to get either an 8GB or a 16GB.

any SD will work, as long as it is fat32 formated.

Ok I just wasn't sure if the new 3DS only could take/couldn't take SDHC or something cuz I know some devices can't do SDHC sometimes and he was asking me what mem card to get for his new 3ds, as i'm gonna try and soft mod it for him.

So would frogminer be the easiest method then? it's his 3DS, Iv'e softmodded my own and it wasn't too hard but I just wanna make sure this method isn't that hard either unless things have changed since then..mainly just afraid of a brick cuz I remember when modding my own 3DS the new 3DS and the old 3DS had certain files you needed to move and they were separate.

Frogminer is the only free option for 11.4 And higher. And it is not hard. Just follow the tutorial.
And if anything goes wrong, you can always get a ds flashcard and do CTRTransfer.

"and fighter"? and the one I think I checked(I can't remember the exact firmware) was 11.6.something, so would frogminer work then? i'll have to double check when he gets the system.

He means you'll need to use Frogminer if this system is 11.4 or higher (autocomplete sp).
And he's right except there's no chance of brick if you use 3ds.hacks.guide. There is a very small chance it won't work, but it's like 1-2%. I that case you can do ntrboot (the non-free flashcard method).

if its 11.3 or lower you have easier options if its 11.4 or higher your best off using frogminer (as its free) . . . ntrboot is the best and essayist method (but you need to buy a compatible flashcard)
