AnotherWorld DS is based on newraw engine (http://sourceforge.net/projects/newraw/) and newraw is a re-implementation of the engine used in the game Another World. This
game, released under the name Out Of This World in non-European countries, was written by Eric Chahi at the beginning of the '90s.
More information can be found here : http://www.mobygames.com/game/sheet/p,2/gameId,564/.

You will need the original files from English version of Out Of this World, here is the required list :
BANK*
MEMLIST.BIN

Controls :
* Direction pad : the joystick ... (up used to to jump & swim)
* A : allow you run/shoot with your gun
* B : used to to jump & swim (easiest than UP ^^)
* SELECT : allow to enter a code to jump at a specific level
* START : pause the game
* Touchscreen : exit the game
* R : Save game state
* L : Load game state

Had a go and it runs fine although sound is a bit crackly.

Shame about the copy protection (though I can understand why it's still on) luckily I still have my Amiga version of the game so I dug out the code wheel.

its interesting, i used the another world files and "out of this world" appears on the title screen. probably something to do with newraw.

the sound is pretty good, some static issues but i'm sure that can be cleaned up.

the game feels great and is running at full speed. it is fully winnable. =)

thank you for doing this alek.

some thoughts/bugs/etc:
the action button could be Y and the jump button could be B. when you are running and holding down A it seems backwards to hit B to jump. however A and B (and UP) do work so perhaps a way to allow users to set what buttons they want to use?

START is not pausing the game for me, it actually does not seem to be doing anything.

it would be nice if there was an option to turn off the bottom screen, perhaps it could go dark after a minute. it is a nice way to save a tiny bit of battery.

in the caves just after you shoot the wall to release the water, in the next room to the left there is a small area where the graphics do not reach the edge of the screen. if you keep running you will run over this part but it looks like something you need to jump over. if you jump here you can't jump on the part after it and you will die. i'm not sure if this is a problem with newraw or the dos version. it has been a very long time since i played the dos version in ms dos (or dos box). i wanted to snap a photo of this screen but my camera needs to be charged.

once you get out of the caves there is a set of stairs leading up. if you run all the way to the right (do not go up the stairs), you will end up at the top of the stairs. yet there is a bottom part of this area with a very important puzzle element. this is a "visual" bug that has always existed in every port of another world (including the 15 anv edition). i would be nice to see this finally fixed so that if you run to the right you end up at the bottom part and if you go up the stairs you end up at the top part. i think eric was always forcing users to go to the top first because you see the alien friend crawling around and perhaps that gets users to understand that they need to help that guy out. if they miss the puzzle element on the bottom the alien can never get free. once you know what to do it becomes rather strange that you can't attack this part of the game in the order you want. i personally would rather start at the top but the user should have that choice based on which direction they choose to take.

at the top part after killing to two guards (including the one that rolls the power ball) there is a gun charging station. i'm having problems getting this station to work. sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. it should work each time you pull out the gun.

on the swimming stage it is easy to see how high the gamma/backlight is. some version have a gamma/brightness adjustment. it would be nice if something could be added, tho i'm not sure how easy that would be.

after the game is beat and the credits roll, the last note played seems to get stuck on the text "now go out of this world".

most of the "another world" english dos files floating around are cracked. mine runs fine and i don't need to mess with the code wheel. just FYI if you pirate the game.

Then I shall have to find a cracked version so I can retire my trusty old code wheel.

I wish that soon enough, we can add songs to this port... Like the ones that were on Heart of The Alien...
Anyway, thanks for making this port! (Hopefully i have the cracked version to begin with)

Found out that... at the end, when Buddy comes before you fall from a big laser shot, you can go faster than him (run & jump all the time), but i don't remember that in any of versions of the game.
Also, at the prison part (2nd level), Lester flickers when you run and jump to the right.

great project
loving it so far and everything is working great
i cant believe how much im sucking at this game when i could breeze it years ago
still a classic game that must be experienced even with the hd remake

I have the GBA version on my M3 Perfect, but a DS version is good too. I don't have time to set it up today (going to my nieces birthday party in a bit, which will likely end up being an all day affair), but I wonder if it runs better than the GBA version. I already found the necessary files.

The only problem is i have to see the wheel code always
and i can't find the cracked version :\

it would be nice if there was an in game save !

Yeah, I looked around a bit, downloaded the game from 3 different places and none of them are the cracked version. All want that code wheel malarkey. Can't be arsed with that, so I'll just stick with the GBA version until I CAN find the cracked version. The GBA version didn't bother you with silly code wheel questions. I mean, a DS version is nice and all, but it needs to bypass that code wheel stuff to be useful. No one is going to carry the code-wheel codes around with them.

Just sayin'

EDIT: Finally found a cracked version (most floating around definitely are NOT cracked)......I'd post a link, but even old ancient abandonware games are against the rules to link to......if I could mention the site I found it at, I would, but I can't, so I won't.

"outofthisworld.exe" was the one I found that doesn't hassle you with code wheel crap. It's a self-extracting zip.

The GBA version runs with much less static (like none) in the sound though.

Except one thing: Technically this game isn't abandonware. It's still being sold. http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/another_wor...versary_edition

Of course if you'd want to get really technical, it's not the original version being sold. By the way, if you're thinking of buying that to use the files with this ds port - don't. The files you need aren't there. Though you should still definitely buy it, because it's incredible.

That said, I definitely agree with Rayder on the whole code issue.

I'm glad to see this but I hope development continues because the sound is so very bad that I wouldn't call this playable yet.
