Does legit Windows 7 upgrade refuse to install on PCs that have had a pirated copy of XP installed on it? Another question is that if I do buy the upgrade pack instead of the full install pack will it still allow you the option to format the hard drive and start from fresh?

in place upgrade must be legit (both OS's)
but this is on vista only so you have to do a fresh install on XP

I suggest backing up any files you want to keep

From Windows XP you have no choice but to format the hard drive, only from Vista you can upgrade.

This!

You can however, seen as you say you are a noob, you can still use the upgrade key to install the full version. I am not going to give you the instructions, I am just throwing it out there that it is available, and can be done, and has been done. Use Agent Google if you don't know how it is done.
