Homebrew Animate a sprite with C++

I am making a 2d side scroller Alien for 3ds homebrew and am working on animating the sprite I have tried making a .t3s file for each sprite frame but this does not work and it causes the game to crash as of late I am considering making a sprite sheet but then it seems they would show up all at once there is also no devkitPro samples explaining this matter so I am truly lost any help would be great thanks
