The mobile version of Minecraft, currently in development by Mojang AB, will initially be released exclusively on the Android-based Xperia Play from Sony Ericsson, Gamasutra has learned. The news came after an invite to a special E3 after hours party that will include what sounds like a playable version of Minecraft on the Xperia Play.

"When playing on smartphones you will have a different screen size compared to PC, different hardware, different attention spans and thus the game needs to be customized to fit the mobile specifications," said a spokesperson for Mojang when speaking with Gamasutra.

The release date of the mobile version is not known at this time, though it will likely follow suit with Minecraft by releasing early with consistent updates, Gamasutra said. The length of the exclusivity for the Xperia Play is also not known.

More details are expected to be announced at the upcoming Sony mixer during E3, which is being held June 6 to June 9, 2011. We'll be on hand at E3 and will provide any new information we discover on Minecraft and its mobile counterpart.[/p]

Honestly, the iOS version should've came first. Sony doesn't deserve this IMO, being the first to get Minecraft Mobile, but I guess after all the attacks, they deserve something, but not at all Minecraft.

Well, considering that Minecraft is coded in Java, it is probably easier for the developer to port it to an android device before IOS. I can't wait to play this on my mom's rooted Nook Color with CM7. I don't think I would like playing this on a phone screen.

I wonder since it's running on the Android OS, if it will run on other Android based devices like the Asus Eee Pad Transformer and Motorola XOOM.

Not any time soon, possibly never.
Notch announced mobile versions of Minecraft a while ago, but there hasn't been any say on a console version. Not to mention that this console generation may soon be coming to an end, which would make it pointless.

possibly - however the Xepria has a 'gamepad' built in, while other phones don't - so extra code needs to be made for 'touch screen' controls & because of this the gaming screen will be reduced (or cluttered) to accompany the controls 'on screen'

The Xperia Play has a dedicated gamepad, so it makes much more sense to get Minecraft Mobile first. Saying a company "doesn't deserve it" isn't even relevant in this case considering the fact that Sony Ericsson's got the only offering on a true dedicated gaming mobile phone.

Notch is already familiar with developing for Android plus its obvious he prefers Android over iOS.

    Go home hipsters.

Looking at it on the Xperia Play it looks like it would work wonderfully on the PSP.

Yes. It is. If it wasn't high spec it'd be done on DS by now; your grandma's dog's computer could run it easily.

No. The DS hardware is just terribly out of date. Even in 2004, it wasn't exactly cutting edge.

if you set up a local server on another machine with good spec you can get it running on some real old ones

because the level generation is done on another machine the poor old one has just got to place the data and not generate it

64mb video graphics the game DOES work
but theres alot of graphic flaws
