The Tories were more left leaning bs, just like Labour. No genuine conservative government would be so soft on giving people benefits on practically everything.

You think the Tories were left leaning?

Here's what happened under the last Tory government.

Increased reliance on food banks.
Increased NHS waiting lists
Benefits reform i.e. PIP and imposed a 2 child tax limit
Refusal to privatise such as water and trains
Increased gap in the super rich and workers

If you think this is left leaning, you clearly do not understand the difference between right and left wing politics. Though it has to be said Starmer's Labour and Labour generally at centrist at best (bar the Corbyn years).

Reform will crash and fail to deliver anything resembling governance as they made of people who are good at shouting about shit rather than doing anything. Farage is top tier grifter.

Just yesterday there were two stabbings in London, one of which wasn't in the news. To be honest, there's probably been more stabbing though we just don't know about it because people don't report it. Thanks a lot for all the crime, Starmer and Khan.

Both were in the news because I read about them. IF you get stabbed, it will get get reported to the police because you will need medical assistance. London is a safe city, violent crime is not an issue. In fact homicide rates hit a new low recently. Thought if you want to have a go anyone, maybe have a go the Tories for getting rid of 20k police officers and a series of preventative measures on the causes of crime. There has been an uptick in crime but that would apply to England and Wales. IIRC, Blackpool has the highest crime rate in the country for violent crime and no ever goes on about it.

Speaking anecdotally as someone who grew up and still lives in London, I feel significantly safer now than I did 20 years ago. There were areas, I would have not even thought about going back in the mid 2000s and go now. It it shitty when violent things happen but unfortunately things happen whether and sadly that is a fact of life wherever you live.

London is a safe city
A safe city? People keep claiming it is, but crime keeps on happening every day. A safe city wouldn't have that. If you're gonna say "London is a safe city" then you might as well say that for the rest of the country... And it wouldn't be actually true. Yes, there are areas which are genuinely safe, but most have been ruined.

Moreover, London is full of crazy people too, as if criminals weren't enough.

I live in London, sadly, and it's a shithole. However, London 26 years ago it was much better. That's long gone.

There's a difference between something like crime against a person and something like murder. I would say the entirety of Blighty is safe. The UK is ultimately safe place to be. I go to Glasgow regularly for work and have never felt in any sort of danger. And this was the murder capital of Britain in the 80s.

Speaking as someone who grew up in a not so great part of London, I disagree, I feel significantly safer now than I did 20 years ago. Could things be better? Yeah they could but we're talking about issues with deprivation and economic decline in the last 20 years.

Well broadly I agree with you, it is not a safe place to be if you're Trans or even just a woman who doesn't try to live up to the insane British ideal of what a woman should be.

Nowhere is perfect but feminist politics (or lack thereof) in the UK has seriously hit an astounding level. That said, violent crime was also pretty bad 20 years ago for everybody. These days, you're more likely to die on a NHS waiting list.

Supporting trans rights is supporting womans' rights and human rights and I would also seriously urge any British person reading this to actively and openly support any trans or otherwise queer people in their right to existence and basic healthcare (which isn't really a given for anyone anymore) to better the lives for everyone in the long run.

Agree completely. Was totally writing from my pespective as a asian man. Can't comprehend what's it like as someone whose Trans and the amount of vile transhobia around.

That TV License bullshit is ridiculous, they now send me letters every few months.

I know they want me to feel threatened and pay for it, but I won't. Just show up and they'll see what happens (either I don't open or I'll film them and waste their time).
You got off easy, I've heard of people getting them every couple weeks. Along with snooping around their house, checking for letters in their mailbox to figure out the name of who lives there so they can start sending more personalized threats. The best thing to do is just clearly inform them that you revoke their implied right of access, both verbally as well as in writing by a clearly posted notice or signage on your property that they can't miss, record/monitor your property with a camera and actually prosecute them for trespassing if they still enter your property. It's the only way they'll stop. They're fucking out of control.
Pffffffffffffffffffffffffffhahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha x9000. Earl gray or breakfast are literally the worst possible teas, just like majority of Brit "cuisine." Asia knows their teas to the T.
Agreed. Thai red tea is delicious, as is chai/masala tea. Africa has some good tea too, rooiboos is pretty tasty.

AS one myself, it's fucking hard. Luckily I'm fine right now with presenting as masc, though it sucks to look in the mirror at times. I was about to start taking estrogen but once I saw Biden's inability to codify trans protections and how Trump wasn't being held accountable, I decided to hold off. It's ten times worse for my trans siblings who are either already transitioned or in the middle of it. They're basically fucked as here in the US, they're basically making it in some states to where places that take Medicaid cannot perform gender affirming care. Which literally means every single hospital. They are trying to make it NATIONWIDE. Trans people also must go by the gender of their birth on their passports unless they already had them changed pre-Trump. We aren't even allowed in competitive sports because of the bullshit belief that trans people are still biologically "men", when part of estrogen treatment is to make your mass SMALLER. But, this administration would rather believe a 2000 year old book of fairy tales presented as fact rather than years of scientific research which actually IS fact. And look, I CAN understand maybe a rule like that for combat sports like Boxing and the like. But NOT for sports like swimming, basketball, track and field, etc where gender has NO BEARING on athletic ability. There's men that run faster than women, and women that run faster than men. And notice how all this outrage is NEVER about trans MEN. There's never an outrage when a woman transitions into a man or having a woman in the men's room. It's ONLY about trans women. Which proves beyond the shadow of a doubt that this epic transphobia going on in the world right now is just another form of sexism. Pure and simple.

It’s interesting to see such different perspectives on safety in London. I think emigre makes a fair point about how perception changes depending on where you grew up; what looks like a "shithole" to one person might actually feel like an improvement to someone who remember how things were 20 years ago.

However, Chellarina and littlemisskittn are right to point out that "safety" isn't just about the absence of violent crime on the streets. If you're part of a marginalized group, the feeling of safety is tied to your legal rights and how the healthcare system treats you. Things feel quite volatile here at the moment, and it’s hard to ignore how political rhetoric on both sides of the Atlantic is making people feel more vulnerable, regardless of what the official crime stats say.
