If you researched, you would have came up with the following:

All PSPs are hackable except for 3000 models (in development) and Slim 2001 models with newer motherboards (August '08 onwards, Datel is working on a battery for these). If the PSP came with a 4.01 official firmware when purchased, 95% of the time it will be unhackable.

Thanks guys.

How can I tell without opening it (or trying to hack it) if its hackable?
take out the battery, it should be on the sticker underneath the battery
And how does that help me know if it is unhackable or not?
From what I've heard, psp 1000's and most psp 2000's are hackable, 3000's are not. the sticker tells u which u have

I know, I know! But some of the 2000's are unhackable so how can I tell which is which without trying to hack it?

...Okay, so you should have read that PSP slims with official firmwares 4.01+ usually always have unhackable motherboards, right?

This is, of course, assuming that the official firmware wasn't changed from the time of purchase, so don't fret if you find that you got a slim with 4.01+ firmware, as it may still be hackable. There's also another piece of evidence, assuming that you get the PSP with the box, as the box has a box code with a letter under it indicating what firmware the PSP had when it was bought. Refer to this thread: http://gbatemp.net/index.php?showtopic=116014

If you get the box along with the PSP, you can see what firmware version the PSP had when it was purchased. You don't even need to hack it to see if it's hackable.

So really, if he got it last year, it's definitely hackable. PSPs that currently can't be hacked are usually just bought very recently.

Yep, he says it comes with the box so I'm good! I sounds like n00b but what on the box?

I can never be sure he isn't lying

... It's on the first page.

A = 3.71
B = ??
C = 3.72
D = ??
E = 3.80
F = 3.90
G = 3.95 / 4.01

If you can't research on your own, maybe you should quit now. :\

Well it turns out that it is a PSP 1000 (PSP-1001 K), the memory cards are only 32MB and it did not have Screen Protectors on it.

Is it still a good deal?

Although the memory card deal on DX is pretty good, I suggest buying only the battery from DX and getting a Sandisk 4GB Memory Stick Pro Duo from NewEgg.ca. The memory sticks sold on DX are simply not worth the price for the quality that it holds up. Slow as fuck transfer speeds and all.
