So, the Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement (or ACTA for short) has been a very controversial piece of legislation. While intended to protect intellectual property rights, its opponents have argued that it was a threat to a free and open internet. ACTA's future has been in doubt for some time now, but today, it became official.

    The final vote tally.

Here is a little picture of the European Parliament right after the vote.

It's very possible that the provisions ACTA contained could reappear in the form of new bills or proposals. Intellectual property rights are a very big issue right now, and the debate over what to do about them isn't going to go away anytime soon.

Still, if you were one of the many who opposed ACTA, today is your day to celebrate. After a long battle, the internet has won its independence on this fourth of July. How appropriate.

it could always come back as a new name with new laws so it's not the complete end of it.

I'm probably going to get mocked for asking, but could someone explain how the voting works? I managed to figure out on my own the red - are no's, and the green + 's are yes's, what about the yellow and gray votes?

The yellow is the maximum amount of votes that could of been received and the greys are those that abstained from voting.

The sad thing is, politicians are going to keep on trying and trying and are banking on either their constituents getting more and more ignorant about their rights or outright fatigue and just giving up because as long as they're getting paid by their lobbyists, the won't tire of it anytime soon. The only avenue is to vote out anyone that showed support for this kinds of measures.

No. After the Euro votes showed that ACTA was dead, worldwide votes were deemed useless.

That's direct proof going for me.

Agreed. This world is run by corporations, and I KNOW for a fact that this bill will come back multiple times. It sucks too because I think the internet does more good than it does harm...

I hear the term "Corporations are people" now and again. The same thoughts come whizzing through my head every time I hear that and that is 'If corporations are really people the we should be able to criminally prosecute them when they do something wrong like say nearly bankrupt the whole country with shady financial instruments, pushing drugs for use that they are not designed for and could cause long term damage etc.'
