Currently, where can I get ps2 consoles in perfect condition, especially the FAT? Or a console that is 100% backward compatible with ps2 games?
Currently, is there any other way to play ps2 games without using a ps2 console, but in a perfect way: some emulator, another console,...? Which?
Where can I get ps2 games to use efficiently later?

Hello everyone.

Where can I get ps2 games to use efficiently later? Have them in quantity and quality, in format, to use them on consoles. But, not having them on disk, so they don't take up a lot of space.

The only console that is backwards compatible with the PS2 (not counting e.g. PS Now) is the PS3, but if I remember correctly, it was not 100%, so if you want any console that can play 100% of PS2 games, then a PS2 is your only option. I would recommend you checking out ebay or any other local used markets, preferably somewhere close so you can inspect the console before buying it if you are worried about getting one in bad condition. As for emulation, the PCSX2 is very nice, but it might not necessarily run smoothly, depending on how powerful your computer is.

Per forum rules, I am not allowed to link to copyrighted software, but (I think) I am allowed to tell you that the Redump project aims to preserve disc-based games for any system; if you google it you might find a set of Redump PS2 games.

Once you have a set of games you would like to play, if you get a phat console, then I would recommend that you install an HDD with FHDB, which lets you play games off of the HDD via e.g. OPL, which is my way of choice of playing PS2 games on the original hardware. You will need a PS2 network adapter for this -- some people have reported bad experiences with the clones, so you might want to get one with a telephone port, as no clones have been made for these. The adapter only supports IDE drives, but mods have been created to use SATA drives for them. Be aware that not all hard drives will work -- here is a list of compatible drives

If you want perfect condition you probably have to buy brand new sealed, probably will cost you several hundred to a thousand, as for PS3's PS2 backward compatilibty you would need to get a model that support it.

  • CECHAxx (60 GB) and CECHBxx (20 GB) - Full hardware backwards compatibility.
  • CECHCxx (60 GB) and CECHExx (80 GB) - Limited hardware emulation (These models do not contain the Emotion Engine, as it is instead emulated by the Cell processor). You may run into issues with some PS2 discs.
  • CECHGxx and above - These models are not backwards compatible.

There is a list of compatibility using the emulator, it is best to use original PS2 hardware as some game would struggle to run well like Xenosaga Episode III.

One option may be to look somewhere local where you can physically inspect the unit prior to purchase.
