I didn't notice this before, but yeah, you can get dirt and dust into the openings. This sucks because I'm one of those guys who sweat and grime a lot when playing games, so the sides of my Lite look pretty nasty because of the dirt that is lodged in the little cracks. I tried using just plain sheets of paper to get them out, and it works a little bit, but the paper wears out too much. I'm trying to think of something else I could use, but the only think I can think of that is sturdy and thin enough is a card or paper that has laminated edges. A little bit of glue or something would work to close up the gap...but it's make it look all weird and stuff.
