Wait, GEN firmware didn't support PSX games before?

I've used 5.03 GEN-A, 5.50 GEN-B, 5.50 GEN-B2, 5.50 GEN-D, and 5.50 GEN-D2, and all of those have has PSX support.

Can this be installed on a PSP 3000 with a firmware version of 5.03 and up?

No, 5.03 only.

What about lower than 5.03? If not, is there any way to upgrade only to 5.03?

You can download the single file from my thread and put this on your memory stick to upgrade to, but only if you're on a lower firmware than 5.03, of course.

Movie that proofs +5.55 games work on the 5.03 GEN-B was released on PSPGEN.
