Hardware 3DS SD CARD

So I like to have a new sd card with 32gb, so I can install more hombrews and cias, but I don't know which cards will work... Do you need an sdxc card, or can you take a microsd card and put it in an adapter and then in the sd card slot? Sorry if this is a noob question. Any help would be appreciated!

I use a microsd so I can use an adapter for my o3ds and still have it available for my n3ds.
