Yesterday my mom went to visit my aunt, and brought back my niece's 3DS for me to look at. It's basically not working at all. The power LED will turn on, but that is all that happens. This is unlike the Black Screen of Death where the screens would at least light up.
Unfortunately I have no information as to how this came to be. Knowing what I do about their household, it could both be due to physical damage (falling etc.) or problems with the OS (interrupting an update or something of the likes).
Can anyone point me in an direction to figure this out? Or is she out of luck?

I remember that happened to me and I WAS SO MAD! I got a rock and smashed it on my 3ds. I recommend you doing that takes out stress. Or you could avoid the stupidity I did to my 3ds and send it to Nintendo to fix it.

I wish I could, but the 3DS is not mine. (and the scratches and general abuse heaped upon it make me cringe)

What color is the led when you power on and does it stay lit or does it switch off after flashing a few times. Could be something as simple as a blown fuse.
The led is blue, and it stays on (solid, even when the lid is closed). I let the battery run out of power (red led, and eventually blinking) and recharged it, and that seems to behave normally.

When the 3ds goes shutdown for a while, are your hear an "poc"? When yes, go in a dark room and start the 3ds. When something flashed on the screens then its the problem on the displays. Maybe some cables are out or something else

Nope, there's no sound or flashing screen. I took the thing apart and put it back together just to be sure that there are no loose connectors too.

I know it doesn't help, but I do have a motherboard that does the same thing. Just like yours it doesn't have the the so-called black screen of death where only the power off screen appears. The blue LED comes on but neither backlight lights up. If I open the P7 latch while the system is powered on it doesn't even make the typical popping sound. All ribbon cables and LCDs are known to be good and tested with other working boards, so that's not the problem. It's not liquid-damaged either. Someone had replaced the cartridge slot on mine though before I received it, so it's possible it may have been damaged or heated excessively when that was done.

The very strange thing though about mine is that once in a blue moon the thing does boot normally and will work fine until I turn it off. Then it won't boot properly again unless I leave it alone for a while.

Spilled liquid on my console and got a similar result.
Put it in rice for 2 days and it works good as new except for the volume slider being abit harder to move.
It's probably a bit late as this thread is a week old, but couldn't hurt to give it a shot right ?.

Honestly, it doesn't look like there was any liquid on it whatsoever (and it apparently stopped working around Christmas last year so if that was the case it's far too late now). I wanted to try to get the nand from the system and use it as emunand to see if that works, but I'm not sure if that's possible, and even if it doesn't work it still won't tell me if there is a problem with the nand or not (it could also mean that there's something else wrong and the nand doesn't get any power doesn't it?).

yall im torn... ive been hacking away at tales of phantasia GBA (the USA version) and have so many documents of reverse engineering i've done
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I just found out that the EU version is better in literally every way, better sound quality, better lighting, and there's even a patch someone made to make the text look nicer
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
Do I restart now using what i've learned on the EU version since it's a better overall experience? or do I continue with the US version since that is what ive been using, and if someone decides to play my hack, it would most likely be that version?
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
@TwoSpikedHands, I'll preface this with the fact that I know nothing about the game, but, I think it depends on what your goals are. Are you trying to make a definitive version of the game? You may want to refocus your efforts on the EU version then. Or, are you trying to make a better US version? In which case, the only way to make a better US version is to keep on plugging away at that one ;)
  • Sicklyboy @ Sicklyboy:
I'm not familiar with the technicalities of the differences between the two versions, but I'm wondering if at least some of those differences are things that you could port over to the US version in your patch without having to include copyrighted assets from the EU version
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
@Sicklyboy I am wanting to fully change the game and bend it to my will lol. I would like to eventually have the ability to add more characters, enemies, even have a completely different story if i wanted. I already have the ability to change the tilemaps in the US version, so I can basically make my own map and warp to it in game - so I'm pretty far into it!
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I really would like to make a hack that I would enjoy playing, and maybe other people would too. swapping to the EU version would also mean my US friends could not legally play it
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
I am definitely considering porting over some of the EU features without using the actual ROM itself, tbh that would probably be the best way to go about it... but i'm sad that the voice acting is so.... not good on the US version. May not be a way around that though
  • TwoSpikedHands @ TwoSpikedHands:
    I appreciate the insight!
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@TwoSpikedHands just switch, all the knowledge you learned still applies and most of the code and assets should be the same anyway
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
    and realistically they wouldn't

be able to play it legally anyway since they need a ROM and they probably don't have the means to dump it themselves

why the shit does the shitbox randomly insert newlines in my messages

It does that when I edit a post.

It inserts a newline in a random spot.

do y'all think having an sd card that has a write speed of 700kb/s is a bad idea?
trying to restore emunand rn but it's taking ages... (also when I finished the first time hekate decided to delete all my fucking files )
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
@Karma177 that sd card is 100% faulty so yes, its a bad idea
  • The Real Jdbye @ The Real Jdbye:
even the slowest non-sdhc sd cards are a few MB/s
  • Karma177 @ Karma177:
@The Real Jdbye it hasn't given me any error trying to write things on it so I don't really think it's faulty (pasted 40/50gb+ folders and no write errors)
