With almost all of those they are either:

A) Too flimsy.
B) Too complex.

I've noticed with every system/handheld that is announced, the mock-up's and early designs are way too complex.

The final product ends up being something simple. They don't want to make something that folds like 6 times, because then it has a higher chance of breaking.

Based off my reference listed below. The screens will definitely be closer to inmate one large screen. It will backwards compatible with DS & DSi games. It will have rumble & tilt sensing abilities. You got to remember this is Nintendo we are talking about so they will always keep some of their traditional design elements, like the d-pad. They aren't prone to copying other companies but do like apple's designs and have been influenced by their designs.

I can only hope this system has better graphics and multimedia features.

I don't think so. I mean, it's 3D without glasses. What else could we want?(Please don't answer that)
And besides. Many game-desginers have already been informed and are working on games for it.

I really do hope that Nintendo makes the effort to protect the 3DS' screens. These "rotate" mockups make sense, but I want to be able to throw the new handheld in my pocket without damaging the LCDs. Ever since the GBA SP, the clamshell design has proved to be a great design. This is why I feel the design of the PSP Go is flawed. Cell phones have better flip-out screens.

I made this...
I think it looks pretty cool.

1. moved start, select, and power buttons to look good next to the new 3D button.
2. added analogue stick on the left hand side
3. moved dpad and a b x y buttons to fit comfortably with analogue stick
4. added stereo cameras
5. added improved DSiXL speakers
6. moved the microphone under the buttons to stop people spitting on the cameras so much
7. rogue squadron 3D! with radar, damage, and weapon select on touch screen

how cool would this be with motion control, 3D, and analogue and touchscreen, shouting orders to your teammates using the mic!

my first photoshop so go easy on me.

I still do not think the ds mic should be move. Maybe lower ,but not remove from the middle. From that spot it looks like the fingers would just cover it up anyway... :/

my theory is it will be a cube, because since a cube has six sides it would be possible to implement 6 screens,
the previous device gamecube shows that they like cubes and might make more

My guess is that it's simply called 3DS for its 3 Dimensional Screens!
