A new article by Electronic Theatre gives us a clue that this may in fact be possible. I've bolded the key parts, but you should read it all.

QUOTE said:
During Nintendo’s recent UK unveiling of the Nintendo 3DS system, Electronic Theatre noticed that none of the systems available housed a Game Card in the designated slot. Over a dozen consoles were on display with various different software titles, and yet none had any media occupying their Game Card slots.

Of course, Electronic Theatre endeavoured to find the reason behind this, with a question proposed to the Nintendo representative as to whether the software being demonstrated Electronic Theatre Imagewas being run from an SD Card, or was located on the system’s internal memory. The company’s spokesperson declined to comment directly, simply stating that “both are possible.”

While the use of SD Cards is of course little indication of the system’s technical capabilities, expandable in capacity as deemed necessary by the software, the fact that the Nintendo 3DS is reportedly capable of hosting such detailed, stereoscopic 3D presentations on it’s internal memory suggests that the on-board storage capacity may be greater than had previously been suggested. Additionally, it also adds weight to the rumour that Nintendo intend on shipping the Nintendo 3DS console with software pre-installed on this internal media.

More details on the Nintendo 3DS systems are likely to be coming very soon, with the system’s manufacturer promising more details next month. Of course, Electronic Theatre will keep you updated with all the latest on the Nintendo 3DS console.

i think the internal memory part was confirmed
but not sure

This might (hopefully) be more proper than the Wii's feature doing something like this. (its more like copying back to the nand inb4, instead of loading it from the SD card.)
Otherwise the NAND (if the intern memory is a nand.) would be dead earlier than the Wii's. As games are stated to be 2GB max. at launch already..

Though, it would be cool if we got the keys and so have cfw for homebrew loading from SD, either even games. Instead of flashcards.
3D HBC...

win.

In anycase, until we got the keys like on the Wii, I won't give that a chance. But Exploits for homebrew though.

(or games? meh, lets keep it on homebrew)

Edit:
@post above, I heard the 3DS would have a HDD, but that's propably becuase the guy didn't know a other word for intern memory than HDD.

And everyone disagreed with my idea of booting from the SD card

Is that all people care about? Can be hacked? Can it be hacked now? how about now? Just buy it the console.

Also yeah the whole if the system gets hacked we could boot off the SD cards instead of flashcarts, came around when the DSi came out.

Sorry but I'm just in angry mode

I will buy the 3DS on launch, with some launch titels.

And go to Dx/Tempshop for 3DS protection bag/case/screens etc. (Hopefully I can buy all the stuff inb4)

But I still do care about it see it being hacked.

I heard about this on an after E3 video i just happened to come across on youtube/E3 accidentally
smile.gif
guess this confirms it?

Wait, what? The DSi's had internal memory apps since launch, and now ships with Camera, Sound, Browser and Flipnote. Why is it a surprise that the same would happen with the 3DS?

(DSi mode also hasn't been hacked yet, after almost 2 years now. Homebrewers, there's your warm-up.)

But except for that part. We all use the thing for Homebrew too.
Unless Nintendo has OtherOS in the 3DS...

Which I highly doubt. Than we still have enough reason.

Well I guess we'll just need an exploit to gain kernel access like in the PSP, then *bam* CFW loaders and softmods everywhere.
You saying that just put the fear of how this is going to be a huge ass cat and mouse game like with iOS and Wii. Hacks, Update, better hacks, better updates.

The 3DS will do that (probably, after all it's supposed to be backwards compatible with DSi apps) but according to the article, the 3DS may be able to load retail games you get in carts (ie Mario Kart 3DS or Kid Ikarus) directly from the SD (not only DSiWare apps), much like a Wii USB loader but only for legally obtained games.

How is this news?
The DSi has games that can run from the SD Card and Internal Memory. The only thing this article somewhat confirms is that the 3DS has more storage space to run all the demo games and videos.

That's exactly why it's news.
The weak point of the DSi is that you can play games off of the SD card.
People have been using a hack to be able to play DS roms through the SD card.
If the 3DS is supposed to have more security, you wouldn't think that they would allow you to play games through an SD card.

My point is that just because the DSi has something, it doesn't guarantee that the 3DS will also have it.

That's incorrect.
There hasn't been a hack where you can run DS roms through the SD Card. DSi Mode isn't hacked yet. We're only able to run DS roms with a flashcart.

Whoops, never mind, I meant home brew not roms.

He means that we might be able to install 3DS game carts to the SD Card or Internal memory like Xbox Game Install.

LOL EXTERNAL HARDDRIVE FOR 3DS

WIN

Maybe they are going to sell revision with different amount of internal memory (or even real HDD? I don't see that coming, as HDD's takes more power then NAND or any other flash memory)
