So apparently the 3DS will use the same charger as the DSi.
Or so it says over here:
Source.
Do you guys think it's true?
Nintendo usually changes their charger..
The only 2 consoles that used the same charger were the GBA SP and the NDS original.
Awkward..

but an improvement if true

Sorry if this was already mentioned somewhere.

It also said you could use the DS Lite charger (or atleast on Nintendo3DSBlog it did)

You could use the GBA SP charger with the DS Phat so I don't see why not.

It doesn't really matter since the 3DS comes with an AC Adapter anyway.
yeah but what about when travelling ??
How about car chargers ?? or if you go on holiday - you wouldn't want to take the 3DS charging base with you - instead you could take a USB charging cable (& a Mains-to-USB adaptor)

Every model of the 3DS shown had the same charger input as the DSi.

I would think that it would be the same voltage input as the DSi.

Also, does anyone know for the charging dock thing that comes with it, how it charges? Do you have to plug it in and the dock is just a piece of plastic? Or when you put it on it starts charing automatically?

Edit:

I just remembered I have a USB charger for my DSi. Sweet.

if you have a spare it is safer

I don't understand why you'd need a spare though? I mean, you'd have to be really stupid to break an AC adapter.

If you really need one just get a cheap 3rd party DSi charger since they work too.

I don't think a USB charger would do much good. Not everyone has a laptop or portable USB device they can use while charging. It would be much better to just get a separate battery, have it fully charged. That way, you can easily just exchange batteries and continue gaming. At the same time, I can't see people gaming for 5 hours straight on a handheld. At least, I don't.

I don't understand why having the same charger is a all around good thing, but people still have to complain and argue about something...

That was a mistake you silly goose.
Sources are linked to for you to check mistakes.

I think it was to cut costs and they had lots of dsi charger ports left in the chinese factory.
Like the original ds was made as cheap as they could since it was a huge gamble.

DSL: I used to keep mine plugged in full time beside my bedside cabinet, and took the other in my laptop case.

How do you charge a separate battery without an extra DSi/3DS since the battery is internal? To do that, you would have to have a specially made battery charger (the charging circuitry needed to safely charge the battery is in the game system, not in the battery) and be willing to keep a screwdriver with you as well. It would be much easier to get a USB charging cord and one of those AA to USB power adapters.

OR:
Charge battery 1, remove it, insert battery 2.
Batteries lose charge if ot used over time though.

It may matter if you want to import a 3DS into your country (eg USA to UK) and you need to know you have a compatible charger when you receive it.

In my opinion the 3DS's charging ports don't look the same size as a DSi's:

Edit: This is a better picture and they may be the same:

Can someone please confirm this? I prefer the US versions cause their releases are faster.
Now I got a European DsI XL, and it indeed says WAP 002 for the AC adapter.
Can someone confirm this actually works with the 3DS please?
