Hardware 3DS chipping?

I dunno the term, but there has been multiple times where my 3DS' surface (around buttons and lower screen) kind of chipped/skewed. Maybe it's because of the (glossy) coating tearing off.

I play my 3DS almost daily. Stored in cool place. Is this normal?

PS. I remember that I dropped the surface to my iPod while I was playing in side sleeping position. The 3DS dropped like a domino directly to the iPod, but it was so close like 5 cm apart. And it was happening last week (how did I realize it just now then?)
Any suggestion to polish the surface smooth back?
