Depending on what your starting firmware was, in most cases you'll end up with a brick if you do that as DevMenu does not update NATIVE_FIRM correctly. I would recommend you wait until a easier update solution is out.

and to test
installed it on my old 3ds
When I remembered this detail (the 9.5 update was the N3DS) it was too late, he had already upgraded.

You will probably have to get a hard mod to recover your nand from a backup (if any), otherwise you can try and attempt to enter safe mode by holding L, R, Up, A buttons really quickly just as you hit the power button for about 2-3 seconds, if it boots it will ask to update, click yes thats about all you can do for now.

I have a N3DS XL that I'm trying to update the emunand from 9.0.0 to 9.5.0 using 3dnus. I get 105 files downloaded and converted to .cia files and 3dnus is happy with that. I then copy the files over to the N3DSXL using the SD card manager using teracopy on the PC. Teracopy does a CRC check of all the files copied over and says everything is good. When I load up BBM and point it at the update files I chose to import all files. BBM starts processing and gives me the fault 'invalid cia file' .

I've tried downloading several times using different PCs, but I always get the same fault. What am I doing wrong?
