512MB is the biggest on the DS.
Which rom?

hakouki DS and a few more J games will be 512MBytes

syko5150,
i agree... DS RPG games are a little too short
most of the game play is like less than 10 hours

some of them is just like 4-6 hours.....

DS has already broke that 512 barrier.

I expect games on 3DS to get as high as 1536MB (1.5GB) or 2048MB based on the DS hardware specs.

If the 3DS has a full color palette, we would have higher quality videos, higher resolution textures, higher detailed/polygon models. All this extra detail comes at a storage sacrifice. Nin10doh handhelds are known for being a generation behind. The likelihood of near-like Gamecube quality is high.

Kinda with Njrg on this one; considering it will be eighth generation, I'd expect the games to be a bit bigger than they are now.

Though 2GB seems abit high, I'm just following the trends of history.

GB were just a few kilobytes ranging up to 512 Kilobytes
GBC games and the "colored" versions would ranged up to 1MB
GBA games were average 8MB, and ranged up to 32 MB.
NDS games are averaged 128MB, and ranged up to 512MB.

Just by history's trend alone, a handheld's maximum cart size was 4 times that than that handheld's average size. And that handheld's average size was always several times that of the previous gen-handheld's average.

We've yet to see a ROM size "plateau" where storage doesn't need to increase because "its all they ever needed" No, the storage sizes has always increased generation-2-generation. Extra storage fuels innovation and progress. I know 2GB seems alot, but I strongly believe a 1GB Cart will be as common on the 3DS as 128MB carts are as common on the DS. 2GB games are going to be those "Extreme" cases like Kingdom Hearts, Sands of Time, or other big-budget games.

I take back the comment I said about the 1.5GB cart. When I think twice about it, Memory Cards never had a 1.5 size. Its always been double the increment of the last size. I suggested 1.5 because I was thinking of the "irregular sizes" that you often see in CD-R's 1.8GB UMD's, and Hard Drives.

I don't think the resolution itself will effect the size of the game very much. The increased pallet of colors and increased resolution will keep textures from looking so blocky as they do now though. But then again, that higher level of detail will make the size bigger.

I don't know >_>

hmm. I already see nintendo bringing out the metroid primes on the 3ds (if the cart sizes range from 1-2 GB) could be funny

Actually, GBC games got up to 8MB in size shockingly. Only one or two reached that size, but there were a fair few 4MB games as well (Rayman, DKC, Shantae). And to my knowledge, there were about 3 of those GBA video cartridges that used a 64MB cartridge. The Shrek movies and Shark Tale were on it. They were never dumped apparently due to the dumping tools not supporting larger than 32MB though. And they don't really count as real games either. Spot on everywhere else.

Ontopic though, i think it fair that we'll see some 1GB 3DS games. Gamecube games are generally about 1.35GB in size. If the rumors are true about 3DS being similar in power to a Gamecube, around 1GB should be plenty of space. I don't think many developers will have much to complain about with that size, as long as they don't go overboard with the voices and videos.

Back to the original post though, filesize has little to do with how big polygonal games are. Like someone said, Mario 64 DS was on a 16MB card, Kingdom Hearts DS was on a 256MB DS card. KH has some better graphics, but the only real factor with the filesize was easily the huge array of playable characters and unique battle styles, as well as the fully voiced high quality video (which amounts to around 50 minutes in length when you put it all together). Pretty meaty game KHDS was. It was an RPG to boot, so the gameplay wasn't just jump and run. There were over 13 playable characters, and every one had a completely different fighting style when equipped with a different weapon, of which there are dozens of. So you can imagine how much space that took up. Far more than Mario 64 DS' simple animations. And of course, KH had better animation overall, with dynamic lighting and all the neat stuff.

256MB for very early games and small games
512MB for early games
1GB for later games (most common size i think)
2GB for large games and games towards the end of the 3ds's life

Of course this is complete bull, no one knows until it comes out and someone dumps a few games (if that will ever happen)

As 3ds piracy may never happen it may not even matter.

What about the videos? Does the DS version have videos? Even if it has, the resolution, bitrate, etc, is much, much smaller.

Well as far as the hardware is concerned, we can tell that the probable size of the games for 3ds will be at least(?) 256mb(well maybe the standard or the smallest) cause most of the games will be utilizing the 3d effect. Since the it's a new gen console, it is to be expected that it's rom can reach up to 1gb considering the upgrades of the hardware.Well all of this are speculations since the are no official announcement considering the games for the 3ds.

The DS version is indeed 128MB. It has the videos from the PS1 version, all of them. And actually, the videos look far better on the DS. They're better looking and run at a smoother framerate overall.

The most obvious difference in the PS1 and DS versions of Chrono Trigger is that the DS version has no annoying lag or 5-10 second loading times between battles or areas. It has everything the SNES version did right, as well as the enhancements of the PS1 version, and a few new dungeons to boot. But yeah, the videos are what takes so much space up in the DS/PS1 versions.
