Animal crossing has 3.1v3 on it according to WUM...

only game that has 3.4 on it is Need for Speed Undercover

but this is according to the WUM list so it might be outdated...

There it says that NFS:U has 3.4.

NFS:U is only 3.3. i have yet to see a game on it with 3.4 on it.

in the update section of the disc it is RVL wii system menu v257, which to my understanding is 3.3 or 3.2

Maybe hes lucky and only has 3.3v1 and he can update to 3.3v2 don't know...
but hes getting a wiikey2 so well se what happens...

updating might not help at all, I still can't tell what exactly his problem is....if it didn't go blackscreen right after the OOR update, then it is the wad they installed....and there is only one system menu 3.3, the "v2" simply installed some new IOSs, same menu.

if you are using (1) the recovery menu, (2) you have a chip, and (3) an autoboot zelda, you're doing something wrong, as that WILL boot your disc, irregardless of chip type. is your wii a USA or a PAL wii? find out more about what they did before listening to (or asking for for that matter) suggestions.
