It's not going to brick. If you can't format the card to FAT32 the console won't be able to read it and that will be your dead end until you get a smaller card or a computer.

so i just put the sd card in my phone and then in the 3ds and it is working without any reformatting or nothing. Should i go ahead and attempt it? I ended up buying a 32GB sd card instead.

I have gotten to the point of updating and it is doing so right now. Hopefully everything works! Will post a update once i move farther.
