I don't believe it. I think it's just people who haven't even tried.
This thread seems skewed compared to the results on the Memchunk2.1 hax (with Knuckles) thread. I've only seen one or two bricks on there, so I doubt the risk is high as long as you follow the directions. Format system memory, etc. beforehand and you should be fine.
