I believe it has to be upgraded to at least level 6 for the compound skill to activate.- devilazy

So essentially, I either transport items or pick them up. Which makes a lot of sense now why I'm not unlocking stuff even though I've been grinding quests.... since I'm not carving or collecting my rewards since I already have 99 of everything in my box.- devilazy
