Use a high power magnifier and look inside the connection, I had the same problem and a 10X showed me a slightly bent pin which prevented all 12 pins to align properly and actually shorted out when I pushed the connector together. ( 2 pins in the same slot )

I have taken this Wii completely apart three times now. Have found nothing loose and all connections tight. Your mention of incompatible drive confuses me, when buying a new (re-manufactured drive) no one asks for serial number,model,version,etc of old drive so I'm not sure what you're saying...
