    If you are talking about the WD Passports, I had them since 2010, first the 2.0 USB and then went with the 3.0 USB on another Wii. Never had spindown issues of any sort or any of the other issues you had.

    If a simple copy/paste corrupts his files I would seriously start backing up data on the comp as it might indicate HD failure. (Alternatively it might be his SD card failing randomly)
