I read the NES classics review at IGN and they actually mentioned that "SRAM was used for highscore saving"... The dump says it uses EEPROM_V124 but instead it uses SRAM, could it be this "simple"?
I managed to get the crack working (however, patching an 8mbit Zelda ROM resulted in sticky keys, patching a 32megabit oversized(?) ROM did the job). However the save fix doesn't seem to work on my EZFA anyway...
