There are a range of RGB external lighting options available on the market but instead of light strips, how about something that looks and feels more unique? While not exactly marketed for gaming setup, the SolarPuff Solar Lantern could be one to consider.
It retails for $32 on the official website and has the following specs:
- SIZE: 4.3” (10.9 cm) cube expanded / 8.25” x 4.5” x 0.5” (21.0 x 11.4 x 1.27 cm) flat packed
- WEIGHT: 2.6 oz (74 g)
- SETTINGS: Low (60 lumens), High (90 lumens), Blinking (90 lumens)
- SOLAR PANEL: 160mA 5V
- BATTERY: Lithium Polymer 1200mAh; 3.7V
- MATERIAL: Recyclable PET sailcloth with UV protection. PVC free
Compared to most desk lamps, this one is rather light at 74g and particularly compact as it can be folded flat in no time with its origami-inspired design. Its unique, transparent design gives it a decent look that adds a touch of originality to your set up.
To open it from folded mode, you just have to pull on the handle and give it a twist; and it will stay upright in its cuboidal shape. No need to inflate with your mouth or nozzle
There’s no need for an external power source, batteries or cables, to use the SolarPuff Solar Lantern. As its name suggests, its built-in 1200mAh battery is fully solar powered. It takes around 8 hours for a full charge but this will depend on your lighting conditions. The company estimates up to 30% increase in charge time through a window on a cloudy day. That said, you don’t have to worry much about charging it as it can last between 4-8 hours.
Pressing the power button will power the lamp on, and pressing it again will cycle through the lighting options (red, white, purple, green, blue, yellow, alternating colours and off). Don’t rely on it to read books though as it is mostly meant for aesthetics purposes, for hiking or for a walk. That said, it does pack a unique look.
Other than adding an original touch to your gaming setup, the SolarPuff Solar Lantern is also appropriate (maybe more so) for travels and hikes. Its velcro handle makes it easy to strap around bags and tents, and being solar powered takes off the need for batteries or charging. In addition, it has an IP68 waterproof rating.
However, unlike the company’s other lamps, this model does not double as a power bank. Its 1200mAh might not be enough to charge your phone anyway but having a battery with a bigger capacity and enabling charging would make this accessory more compelling considering its compact form factor.
In addition, if you live in or are travelling to an area with only a few sunny days, you might not be able to use this lamp much. In such cases, having an option to charge or power the device with an external power source would be handy.
Overall, the SolarPuff Solar Lantern is a unique portable lamp. It is fully solar powered, compact and features an original foldable design. It will add an original touch to your gaming setup while proving to be handy for hikes or while camping.
Verdict
- Compact lamp with original foldable design
- Fully solar powered
- Waterproof
- No option to charge with an external power source
- Battery doesn’t double as a power bank
