Best Wired Controller

I always feel like there's a bit of lag with my pro controller (I don't use it too often as I play handheld about 70% of the time). I'm looking to see if a wired solution will remove the lag I feel while playing games.

I've got the hori split pad for my handheld play and love it to death. Would I be better off getting the hori wired controller or a different brand?

Is it possible that the lag you're feeling is from the TV you're playing on and not from the controller? At the very least, you can try putting it in Game/Gaming mode. There might be additional settings for your specific model to get the lowest latency. If you have a PC monitor, try hooking your dock up to it and see if that solved your issue. You don't have to keep using the monitor if you don't want to, but at least that would help you narrow down the cause.

If i'm at home I don't wanna play on table top. I have my elgato hooked to my 32inch 1440p monitor and it's gorgeous looking (for as underpowered the switch may be).

the tabletop mode was just to test if its delay caused by a tv, if you notice it on a gaming monitor then it's definitly the wireless connection.

+1 to this. On some TVs the latency is awful (hundreds of milliseconds), game mode makes a huge difference on those. Makes a difference on any TV, but on most Samsung TVs, it's like 18ms with game mode off and 6ms with game mode on, which is an improvement, but 18ms is already pretty low and I don't notice any lag personally in the types of games I play.

Game Mode might be a separate setting (as it is on my TV) but on a lot of TVs it's under the picture mode setting (where you select Movie, Dynamic, User etc...), which is a bit confusing as you expect that to only affect the picture settings like brightness, contrast etc. Every TV made in the last 10+ years should have the setting somewhere though.

But also. The Switch Pro Controller is bluetooth, and bluetooth is known for having latency. I've never noticed any latency from it when I was using it on the Switch, but I did notice latency when I tried using it with my phone, especially when I had bluetooth headphones connected to my phone at the same time. Some people are more sensitive to it than others though and it also depends on what type of games you play.
The only way to get rid of that latency is to use the controller wired, since the Switch only supports bluetooth.

You're running your Switch through a capture card? No wonder you're seeing an input delay, then.

Plenty of streaming friends don't really have latency issues though? If that was the case you'd seldom see speedrunners stream because it would create too much of an issue (at least i'd imagine).

FYI the Pro Controller has a higher latency when using it wired on the Switch.

Try updating it's firmware if you haven't already.

The Elgato has a HDMI passthrough, I assume that's what they're using. Shouldn't have any latency.

I found that OBS had lower input lag than Elgato's own software in my case. The input lag actually wasn't bad, the fastest paced console game I had to test was Fast RMX and that was just fine.

For streaming software I use Twitch Studio and 4k capture utility software (from Elgato) for my capture software. The HDMI is connected from my switch and fed to my PC using USB 3.0. I'm not currently using the HDMI out on my Elgato. If I should be running HDMI out to my monitor I can do so but I feel like that would be splitting my signal to my PC and to my monitor and that would create delay (i'm pleading ignorant here but it would seem that way in my mind).

Splitting the signal won't add any latency, it's far better than what you're currently doing.
You should be using the HDMI passthrough instead. If you want to be in a voice chat while you game or anything like that though, it makes things a little bit more complicated, since the audio from the PC will have latency compared to the image from the HDMI passthrough and it will probably be annoying.
I have no idea what the latency is like in Twitch Studio but OBS might be better.
