It seems several people have been booted off patreon (for the unaware is a play on the word patron and similar to one of those it allows many people to continuously fund whatever site/channel/personality they care to) of late for very spurious reasons, and we have long seen the fun and games that paypal play with shops, enterprises and... everybody else. While some are divisive characters, others are less so and typically offer what would be said to be mainstream political commentary.
We do no small amount of commentary around here but beyond that the emulation (see also https://torrentfreak.com/of-course-atlus-hit-rpcs3s-patreon-page-over-persona-5-170927/ ), flash carts, mod chips and more have been frustrated by the likes of paypal for years and nobody really outside these circles raised an eyebrow and I sense it might be more of a when than if situation here. Pro-active rather than reactive (or in response to) tends to also be a better plan. Even without that though there is something to be said for a moral stand.

Didn't know whether to put this in the staff section or public but seen as it would be the members that do things, and the membership counts several among its ranks that know much of these sorts of services.

No properly thought through idea what to do or suggest here. The former patreon alternative of MakerSupport was kneecapped a few weeks ago by Stripe (an extremely, in some cases almost monopoly, popular credit card processing service that underpins many things, though the more mainstream providers hardly have a rosy past either -- https://www.theregister.co.uk/2013/07/05/wikileaks_credit_card_donations_restored/ ). Some of said commentary types, and a few others besides, are pushing a service called SubscribeStar but I have never heard of them before and have not vetted them (not to mention Stripe appears to underpin them). I recall another where your money is put into a pool and shared between many people but I forgot the name, and have not heard of it lately so not sure it is still around. There is the bitcoin/altcoin thing as well but it is not exactly what you might call a mature infrastructure (though I did see a bitcoin vending machine in a mall a few weeks back which was interesting).

Nominally this is supposed to be about GBAtemp's options here but if you want a more general discussion I will move this or make another discussion elsewhere, assuming one has not been otherwise made by that point.

What kind of projects are getting shut down on Patreon? Do you think GBATemp is in any danger of being screwed over by Patreon? If the kind of porn they allow on there is any indication, I'm not sure we're in too much danger just yet, but these things have a way of blindsiding you.

GBAtemp's Patreon focuses on two things--editorial content and help in funding the various bounties/raffles. As far as the former goes, I doubt GBAtemp will run into any issue, as Niche Gamer also runs a Patreon, and so do other news/gaming sites. Lots of other Patreon accounts also focus on giving back to their community as well, so I don't see those being a problem either. But FAST brought up a good point--flashcarts and such make people angry. Then again, we have no link to TX or anything, so if the site gets blacklisted by them, it won't make any sense at all. It's a really random thing, and I'm not very well versed on the topic, but afaik using Patreon seems to be the best thing as it is, and I'm not sure if there's really any other options that people would venture into trying.

Given Tumblr rid of themselves of porn recently...

GBAtemp has already had fun with paypal (it being responsible for the demise of shoptemp and several things later incarnations of shoptemp aimed to be a directory for). I mentioned the emulator thing above (it was then news to me as well). On the matter of paypal latest news is that they have rather distanced themselves from SubscribeStar (don't know if we can outright say banned but as good as).

Being a proverbial little guy without much in the way of a target on our backs probably helps but it was more of a "try to see things coming" than "we need to act now".
