Hello everyone.
I am currently studying for a course on Primary Education and have a topic about the age at which it is best to read and write. I would really appreciate honest answers and hope to get many different ages.
Thanks in advance.

As far as I can remember, I was 4 when I started learning to read and I was 5 when I started learning to write.

When usually does people learn to read and write? I think I learnt one year earlier than average.
See I dont want to answer that question as I am trying to prove that there is no ideal age to learn to read and write. I now realise that it may be difficult to get a really wide selection by requiring people to read to actually make their opinions heard.

I sincerely don't remember when. My only reference is the average age.

I think about 3 or 4, once my first year at school had started. Could read and write my own name and a few other choice words. Not completely sure though, I'd have to ask my mom....lol

As for reading an enitre book...my earliest mem. of that was when I read a story to my first grade class (7 yrs old), so probably a little earlier I had a full working knowledge of the english lang. TY mom. She always encouraged reading and writing.

I am sorry if it sounded like I having a go at you. I didn't mean to.

I could read simple sentences at the age of 3. I used to look at the captions of television programs and that's how I builded upon my reading ability.
I knew how to write basic sentences like (I like dog) when I was 3. The more advanced sentences came when I was 6/7 years old.

I was heavily encouraged by my parents to read/write.

Well kindergarten teaches writing...sort of. I remember learning stuff like my name, and simple words like dog or cat.
Grade 1 is where I learned a ton of writing and how to read.
